Administrative Regions in Bulgaria and the Structure of Government

The country is divided into 28 districts for administrative purposes. A district, or region normally consists of a regional town and the countryside. Districts have a regional governor as well as a local mayor who runs the municipality.

Many people confuse the issue of residence with that of citizenship. If you obtain Bulgarian residence you are still entitled to your British passport and are indeed considered a British national. If you wish to obtain full Bulgarian nationality you may apply to do so but there are limited benefits in doing

Bulgarian permanent stay certificate

The permanent stay certificate (or permanent residence card) is normally applied for after:

• five years of continuous legal residency; or
• marriage to a Bulgarian citizen.

Most property-buyers arrive as tourists. Since Bulgaria’s entry into the EU, i has become much easier for British citzens to visit. Previously, a stay of betwee one and three months entailed applying in advance for a ‘Type D’visa through Bulgarian embassy outside Bulgaria

The Bulgarian education system offers a reasonable education from infant school onwards, with a very high rate of entry to university. The big drawback, however, is the language. A child from Britain entering the local school system would struggle to keep up initially.
